India's toughest exam, from the inside — one aspirant, one small town, three attempts.

Subash graduates in B.Sc. Physics in May 2022, and tells his family he will write the Civil Services Examination. His father earns twenty-one thousand rupees a month. Delhi coaching would cost more than the family earns in a year. So he studies from the public library in his small town, pays for everything with evening tuition — and is given a nickname by the tea-stall owner on the corner that is not meant kindly.

He misses the 2023 prelims by four marks. He clears the 2024 prelims and fails the mains. And in the third attempt he finally learns what the examination rewards — and clears it, with an all-India rank of 614.

It opens with the whole UPSC syllabus at a glance — every paper of the prelims and mains, the topics serious candidates actually cover under each heading, and one working idea for each. That section is in the free sample.

Every chapter ends with Subash's notebook — the practical part: the exam's structure and marks, age and attempt rules, what the prelims and mains really test, one standard source for every part of the syllabus, how to read the newspaper in forty-five minutes, choosing an optional, a daily timetable (including for people who work), revision by recall, negative-marking arithmetic, CSAT, answer writing, the essay, ethics case studies, the DAF and the interview, and what to do after a failed attempt.

The last pages are a complete step-by-step plan for covering the whole syllabus, month by month, for a new candidate starting from nothing.

Subash is a fictional character. Every fact about the examination has been checked against the UPSC notification for 2026 and its published results.

Five parts, twenty-three chapters, an epilogue, and the plan.
