She was not waiting to be convinced. She had simply decided.

Kayalvizhi Ramasamy is twenty-seven and the only woman supervising a building site in Kallanur. Her father was a mason who put up half the houses on Kamarajar Street and died with his own one-third finished — four rooms of pillars, a roof over two of them, rebar standing up out of the columns like something waiting. For seven years Kayal has been finishing it a room at a time, out of her own salary, in the order the money allows. Everybody in town knows the house. Everybody in town has an opinion about the girl who will not get married.

Mugilan Rajendran moves into the upstairs room opposite in the first week of the monsoon. He is twenty-six, on his third attempt at the civil services examination, and running out of both money and attempts. On his first night in Kallanur he watches a woman climb onto an unfinished slab in the rain to tie down a tarpaulin, and decides, with the confidence of a man who has learned everything he knows about this from films, that he is going to change her mind.

It takes her four months and one very short conversation on the tank bund to explain that he is not a suitor, he is an expense — and, to his enormous credit, he stops.

What follows is not a man wearing a woman down. It is a road-widening notice pasted on her compound wall, a ten-rupee court fee stamp, a Right to Information application that turns out to be the single most useful thing two years of a wasted syllabus ever produced, a concrete slab that cannot be cured any faster than twenty-one days no matter who is in a hurry, a marriage proposal from Dubai, and a rainwater pit dug at night by two people who are both pretending it is about drainage.

A slow, funny, stubborn novel about a woman who was never broken and did not need fixing, a man who finally read the room, and the difference between soaking into something and being given somewhere to go.

Set in the Tamil Nadu hill country. Twenty-six chapters and an epilogue.
